The HTLV-1 (human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1) is a retrovirus etiologically associated with tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1 associated myelopathy (TSP/ HAM) and adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATLL). These two forms of clinical presentation are the best known and studied, although the virus may be also related with other clinical conditions, among them, the polymyositis. In Jamaica and Japan, the association between HTLV-1 seropositivity and polymyositis has been described in 85% and 16%, respectively. In the present study, we report a case of polymyositis associated with HTLV-1 as an uncommon form of clinical manifestation in a 10 years-old child mimicking muscular dystrophy. The possibility of vertical transmission (breast feeding) is outlined in this case. The parents of the patient signed a consent form.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) types 1 and 2 belong to the Oncorna group of retroviridae, a large family of viruses, grouped initially by pathogenic features, but later revised on the basis of genome structure and nucleotide sequence. HTLV-I was the first discovered human retrovirus to be associated with a malignancy in 1980. The malignancy, first described by Uchiyama and co-worker...

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is associated with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Only a limited percentage of infected individuals develop disease in response to the virus while the majority remain asymptomatic and HAM/TSP is the most common clinical manifestation of the virus. HAM/TSP is an inflamma...

The human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first human retrovirus identified. It has been clearly implicated in the pathogenesis of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. Other infectious, inflammatory, or immune-related diseases (uveitis, infective dermatitis, polymyositis, arthropathy, Sjögren syndrome, interstitial lymphocytic pneumonia) are s...
متن کاملA wide spectrum of collagen vascular and autoimmune diseases in transgenic rats carrying the env-pX gene of human T lymphocyte virus type I.
To investigate the pathogenesis of human T lymphocyte virus type I (HTLV-I)- related diseases, the env-pX gene of HTLV-I was introduced into the germline of inbred Wistar-King-Aptekman-Hokudai rats. A wide spectrum of collagen vascular diseases was evident in the transgenic rats, including chronic destructive arthritis similar to rheumatoid arthritis, necrotizing arteritis mimicking polyarterit...
متن کاملHTLV-I infection and neurological disease in Rio de Janeiro.
Fifty patients with chronic neurological diseases attending a clinic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were examined for evidence of HTLV-I infection. Fifteen of 27 with progressive paraparesis of obscure origin had antibodies to HTLV-I in high titre in their serum samples, and 10 of 13 studied had antibodies in their cerebrospinal fluid. The clinical features of the antibody positive patients were si...
